[Green-Activist] Electrical items on "standby"

I wrote these notes to another site today in a reply to someone who was
asking about how much power is wasted when electrical items are left on
"standby." I thought it might be of some interest to listmembers, so i will
paste it in here:

"Regarding electrical items put on standby - it is true that many of them
used to use an incredible amount of energy. I had a CD player/radio which
used 40 watts of power when on and 33 watts when on standby. In recent
years, though, there has been a marked effort to really cut down energy
waste on standby - at least here in Australia. My TV and laser printer, for
example use less than 1 watt each. But one should check each appliance and
push governments. to legislate that all appliances should clearly mark how
much they use on standby.

Most homes have several appliances on standby at once. If one had five
appliances each using 1 watt on standby all day that would still come to 120
watt/hours per day - a quite significant amount of wasted electricity."

Cheers,
