Howard Govt hypocrisy on growing global nuclear threat: Greens

As the nuclear threat escalates in North Asia with North Korea's
announcement that it intends to conduct a nuclear test and with the UN
Security Council poised to act against Iran, it is madness for Australia
to be considering selling uranium to China and India, the Australian
Greens said today.

"There is an inextricable link between uranium for nuclear power and
uranium for weapons," Greens energy spokesperson Senator Christine Milne
said.

"Prime Minister John Howard continues to claim that he has made
Australia safer through his deputy sheriff role to the United States in
Iraq and with his support for US President George Bush's global nuclear
energy plan.

"Nothing could be further from the truth. The threat of nuclear conflict
is becoming greater by the day. A new nuclear arms race is under way and
both sides will accuse the other of provoking the escalation.

"Australia has done nothing over the last decade to pressure nuclear
weapons countries to reduce their nuclear arsenals, as required under
the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

"On the contrary, Prime Minister Howard is flirting with destroying the
treaty by opening the door to uranium exports to India.

"Australia should take a leadership role in the region and abandon it
plans to expand uranium mining and to move into uranium enrichment and
nuclear power.

"The Australian Greens are so concerned about the growing global threat
of nuclear conflict that we have launched a national campaign calling on
Australians to petition the government not to undermine the NPT."
