We do have another few big projects on at the moment that we are working on, so we will have to take it one step at a time. I have spoken to Maria Star from St Johns Community Care, and have discussed the possible members of the sub-committee that was mentioned in the letter from Leslie Sparkes. Maria has come up with a possible 6 or 7 members. What would you (or Council) like to see as the plan of attack from here? I would suggest that we have a meeting with all concerned: Council, the sub-committee, and Cairns Community Broadcasters Inc. It also appears as text below. Can you please email it our to your presenter email list and put it up on the staions notice board. Many thanks, Jim <> DEAR STATION MANAGER, PLEASE PUT THIS UP ON YOUR STATION NOTICE BOARD AND EMAIL TO YOUR LIST OF PRESENTERS AND PROGRAM MAKERS PRESENTERS AND PROGRAM MAKERS: Do you want to make a nationally syndicated program for Christmas Day, New Year Day or New Years Eve? or Do you have a weekly 27'50", 55'50" or 59'50" summer series lasting 2 to 3 months for national syndication? or Have a special, or series of specials, with maximum duration 59'50"? BACKGROUND ON CHRISTMAS DAY, NEW YEAR DAY OR NEW YEARS EVE PROGRAMS This year Xmas day falls on a Sunday, New Years Eve on a Saturday, and New Years day is on a Sunday. A lot of stations don't broadcast for many hours, if at all, on Christmas, New Years Days and New Year's Eve. Instead they turn on the Community Radio Network and let CRN do the job. As a result we at CRN drop some of our regular programs on these days and present mostly music-based programs that stations tell us they want. Christmas and New Years Day: Stations tell us that during daytime on both days they like programs with broad appeal, so we don't put on programs that would only appeal to the very young or the very old. Mostly we want programs not targeting particular groups with particular religious or political followings. However most years we broadcast a one-hour Christian-based program. You might wish to make up a special. We have had a variety of specials over the years: how Xmas is celebrated in different countries, different Christmas traditions, best songs of the year, Christmas Carols, etc. Existing CRN Program Makers are also welcome to offer special programs. New Years Eve: requires either a general party style atmosphere, or more youth orientated kind. It needs to be something everyone can appreciate, so not one that will only please one kind of audience, such as hip hop or trance. In addition we need a broadcaster able to do accurate count down to midnight for the 5 time zones covering Australia - (1) NSW, VIC, ACT, TAS (2) SA (3) QLD (4) NT (5) WA. Live is best but we can schedule our computer to play a pre-recorded program so the countdowns are on the dot. BACKGROUND ON SUMMER SERIES AND SPECIALS Many CRN program makers take a well-earned break of 4 to 12 weeks over summer, so we are looking for one-offs and 4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks series to fill the gaps. PROGRAM MEDIUM AND DURATION Unless you have ISDN, or you are able to broadcast live out of our Sydney-based studios, then the program must be supplied in on: (1) Minidisk (2) DAT or (3) a burned audio CD (NOT MP3 etc) Individuals wishing to offer programs should be aware that from 6am to 12 noon on both days our slots are 27'50", or 5'50" and outside these times our slots are 59' 50". You may offer programs that fit to one or more such slots. OFFERS Should be made via email to jbeatson at cbaa.org.or with the Subject line either: Christmas and New Year Program Offer; Summer Series Offer; or One Offs Offer. You need to include your name, all telephone numbers, email address, and the medium you can supply program the on. If you have not previously broadcast a program on CRN in the past 24 months you need to post a sample of any program you have previously made to: We need to hear of your offer by end of day Tuesday 6th December. Thank you. 17 November 2005 Dear Member, After many months of negotiations our organization has an opportunity to relocate our studio premises to a building in Sheridan Street, which is currently leased by the owners of Sea FM. The studio premises are partly set up, so a move would mean we would gain a significant amount of property. We have to make a decision. Do we move? We want this decision to be made by all of us. There are a few points to consider. * If we decide to move we will need people to physically pack and transport our equipment, files, furniture etc to the Sheridan Street premises. The Board can not carry out this relocation without your help. * The rent will be increased. * The space we would have would be about two times what we have at Raintrees. * The lease would be initially for three and a half years, after which we would re-negotiate the contract with the owners. We are calling a General Meeting of all members so a decision can be made. We need to know how much support there is for this option to relocate, because without a lot of support from the members this move is not possible. The meeting is to be held on Thursday, 24 November 2005 in training / meeting room at our studio premises in Raintrees Shopping Centre starting at 6 PM. We hope to see you there. A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "yes". The professor then produced two cups of tea from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. "Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognise that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things - your God, your family, your children, your health, your friends and your passions - things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, you house, and your car. The sand is everything else. The small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out to dinner. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand." One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the tea represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of tea with a friend." Message-ID: <200511220153.jAM1qxLN032619@mail6.tpgi.com.au> Dear Peter, Ken, Bryan & Van, After recent fires on Mt Yarrabah which came very very close to the infrastructures holding our valued and valuable equipment, I thought it might be an idea if we looked at a way of preventing this from happening again. The idea that I had was if we get a contractor to come and have a look at the site now while all the grass is burnt to the ground, and to get them to give us a costing of how much it would be to supply materials and to do the work to put some sort of ground covering which will stop grass from growing close to the infrastructures. Then if we could share this cost amongst us all, then we will protect all our equipment for some years to come. If you have any suggestions or ideas of what material we should use, please share them with all of us, so that we can look at this ASAP. Although, it is unlikely that we need to worry about another fire in the coming months, I just think the sooner it is done the better. And I think if we can get it done before the wet season that would be great, but if not, then as soon as practically possible. But I feel it will be a hell of a lot easier now that all the grass / undergrowth is gone, to do it now. I look forward to your input and prompt responses to this.
